Amantea is a pretty city located on the wonderful Calabria region. It has a fascinating history since it has been an important ground from the beginning of humanity. Amantea features less Greek architecture then any other Calabrese village because native people are said to have kept out Greek occupation for decades. However, the Romans have made a port making of Amantea an important site. Calabria was divided in two parts after the fall of the Roman Empire: Longobardian and Byzantine. Amantea was the border between these two nations. It was controlled by the Byzantines who built a castle that still stands on top of a hill. After the Byzantines, the Arabs conquered the city giving it the name Amantea derivate from the word meaning “strong hold”. Nowadays, Amantea is divided into the historical centre on the hill and the new city with where visitors will find a selection of shops, restaurants and pizzas. It is a charming city that has many gems to offer.
