Baeza is a town in the Province of Jaem added to UNESCO word heritage sites in 2003. It exists since Roman times when it was called Baetia. Today, it is famous for having many of the best preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain. Baeza’s main Renaissance structures are the university, the Cathedral de Santa Maria, the Palacio de Jabalquinto and the squares of Plaza de España. Baeza also features remains of Moorish fortifications including the Cordova, Ubeda gates and the Arch of Baeza. In the 16th century, Baeza grew rich from the production of textile and the local nobles hired important architects to design palaces, churches and public squares.
