Biggar is a busy market town located in the southern uplands of Scotland. The origin of Biggar probably dates back from prehistoric times. It used to be crossed by a roman road linking Clyde Valley to Musselburg Fort. Biggar Kirk is located to the North of the city centre. It was first a wooden chapel that was replaced in 1164 by a Kirk made of stones. The present Biggar Kirk was built in 1546. Biggar school was established in 1608 and the post office in 1715. Biggar Gasworks is today a museum. It was built in 1836 to produce gas from coal. At the end of the 60s, natural gas replaced coal and Biggar Gasworks was converted into a museum. There are many museums in Biggar and its surrounding area including the Moat Park heritage Centre and the Gladstone Court Museum. Biggar is an attractive town with a market place on its centre and several locally run shops. It is also home to many restaurants, cafes and pubs making of it a perfect base from where to discover Southern Scotland.
