El Chalten is the closest town to Lago del desierto and 220Km from El Calafate. It is located at the foot of mount Chalten or Fitz Roy. Visitors can reach the town by a gravel road that may be blocked during the winter. The Isolation is one of the main characteristics of this North corner of the Glaciers National Park. In El Chaltén there isn't an efficient home telephone network, cell phones don't work and internet connection is poor and very expensive. On the other side this quality is one of its attractions. El Chaltén is still a contamination free place and its inhabitants and authorities are making every effort to keep it that way. Most of the visitors of this town come attracted by one challenge the practice of mountain climbing, trekking and walking on some of the imposing granitic needles surrounding the village. From December to March this paradise for adventure lovers attracts thousands of enthusiastic tourists. And the town's capacity is limited, so you must do a previous reservation or consult if you want to make sure you have a place to sleep at.
