The Klaipėda County is also known as Memel territory. This beautiful coastal region is under the administration of the Council of Ambassadors since 1920 when it was defined by the treaty of Versailles. Klaipėda is the only Lithuanian county to border on the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. It features the most important recreational area in Lithuania including the sea resort of Palanga , Nemunas River Delta and the Curonian Spit. Visitors in Klaipėda County will find on the coast beautiful windblown sand dunes and pinewoods. The Curonian Spit is a sandy peninsula extending in a long narrow strip. It is located between the Semba Peninsula and Klaipėda City. The Curonian lagoon is situates on the eastern shores of the peninsula. The Curonian Spit is a perfect place from where to watch indigenous animals since this is where can be found 37 mammal species out of 65 in total in Lithuania. It is home to the common pipistrelle, the serotine bat, the otter and the grey seal. Some insect species can be found in this area and nowhere else in Lithuania. The Curonian Spit is also home to the largest colony of Herons and cormorants in the country. This fantastic site is included in the UNESCO word heritage list. Visitors can stroll along the Naglių natural reserve path where they will be able to see the lagoon, the sea and the Curonian Spit in a glance. Klaipėda County truly is a wonderful place to visit. It is a fantastic holiday destination for many Lithuanian and people from all around the word.
