Mertola is located in South-eastern Portugal, close to the Spanish border. It is situated in the Alentejo Region. Mertola Castle dominates the town. This castle is of Muslim origin but the current building was reconstructed after the town was taken over by Christians. The main church is the most important monument of Mertola; it was originally a mosque. In 1238, this mosque was turned into a church. Amongst attractions, Mertola features the Islamic Art Museum, The Palaeo-Christian basilica and a Roman House.
