The village of VÃk (or VÃk à Mýrdal in full) is the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the main ring road around the island, around 180 km or 110 miles by road SSE of ReykjavÃk. Despite its small size (about 300 inhabitants) it is the largest settlement for some 70 km or 45 miles around and is an important staging post, thus it is indicated on road signs from a long distance away. It is an important service center for the inhabitants and tourists around the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. A remarkable nearby feature is the beautiful black beach with the Reynisdrangar, black basalt columns sculpted by the sea. VÃk lies directly beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which itself is on top of the Katla volcano. Not only is Katla an active volcano, but it is also well overdue for an eruption.
