Vilnius County was established in 1566; it is the biggest and the most densely populated region in Lithuania. The county and state capital, Vilnius City, houses the Lithuanian government and parliament seat, the central bank, stock exchange and branches of major banks of the country. Vilnius County is a mixture of cultures and nationalities. This is where Lithuanian, Poles, Russians, Byelorussians, Jews and Tartars live side by side. Vilnius is a charming county which typical landscapes consist of forests with numerous lakes. Visitors in Vilnius County will find tourism infrastructures, cultural events and many sport activities. Several interesting monuments can be seen in Vilnius old town and there are many castle and churches in the region including the remains of Medininkai castle. The county also houses some museums such as the Lithuanian Art Museum, and the museum of applied art.
